New Horizon Updates – Senior’s Peer Engagement Project

On the issue of MAID – Medical Assistance in Dying.

According to the Government of Canada website: Medical assistance in dying (MAID) is a process that allows someone who is found eligible to be able to receive assistance from a medical practitioner in ending their life. The federal Criminal Code of Canada permits this to take place only under very specific circumstances and rules. Anyone requesting this service must meet specific eligibility criteria to receive medical assistance in dying. Any medical practitioner who administers an assisted death to someone must satisfy certain safeguards first.

Only medical practitioners are permitted to conduct assessments and to provide medical assistance in dying. This can be a physician or a nurse practitioner, where provinces and territories allow.

The New Horizon initiative is pleased to have Dr. Monique St. Martin speak to the matter on Sunday February 16th. This will be the fifth workshop out of the approve six. Dr. St. Martin has been a family physician in Sudbury since 2017. She also works in long term care and CCC Slow Paced Rehab. She has a strong interest in geriatrics and palliative care. She has been a MAID assessor and provider since 2022.

While the New Horizon workshops are geared to those who identify as 55+ years of age, all are welcome. The workshops are held in the Heritage Hall, on the lower level of the church starting at 12:00 noon (ish). Snacks will be provided.

If there is something we can do to facilitate your participation, please do not hesitate to ask.
